General Guidelines

  • Your dataset should be submitted as an SPSS data file.

  • Please send a completed “Database Fact Sheet” together with your data file.

  • Every variable should be identified using the exact codes presented in this codebook. If you asked a question somewhat differently (WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT BE DOING), try to recode it to match the one in the codebook, and include the recoded variable in the data file you submit. If it is not possible to recode the variable to match the WIP common coding scheme, indicate the difference in the Database Fact Sheet.

  • If you weighted your data, include the weights in the data file you submit and name the variable WEIGHT. If you did not weight your data, give a value of 1 to every individual case for the WEIGHT variable.

  • If your respondents were assigned an ID number, include these with the data file you submit and name the variable ID. If you did not create ID numbers for your respondents, leave the ID variable blank. You do not have to create the Commonid variable.

  • Base refers to the part of the sample that responded to the question. The base may vary from question to question. Some questions will have the same base, and others may have different bases.

  • If you asked a specific question using a base that differs from the one designated in the codebook, please do the following:
    • If the base population in your database is broader (for example, all individuals instead of those 16 years and older), filter out those respondents that should not be included and submit the recoded variable. For example, recode everybody younger than 16 as system missing.
    • If the base population is smaller (for example, you asked the question only of adults while the common base should be all respondents), include the variable and indicate the difference in the Database Fact Sheet. (NOTE: YOU SHOULD NOT BE USING A SMALLER BASE. )

  • For missing data, use -3 for DK and -2 for RF. System missing data should be coded as system missing; it should not be coded as 0 (e. g., non-Internet users should be coded as system missing for Internet-related variables).

  • Please send your data file and Database Fact Sheet to Michael Suman of the U. S. team: msuman@ucla. edu. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Michael via the e-mail above.
