First introduced to the public in 1992. The smartphone was called the Simon Personal Communicator, and it was created by IBM more than 15 years before Apple released the iPhone. inventor Frank Canovainvented the first smartphone in 1992. the problem There was no smartphone at the time and Canova wanted to make communication easier for everyone. advantage In addition to placing and receiving cellular calls, the touchscreen-equipped Simon could send and receive faxes and emails. It included an address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock, and notepad, as well as other visionary mobile applications such as maps, stock reports and news. So it was a much better device in comparison to other similar gadgets of the time. It lead to the invention of more modern models of the smartphone (including the famous Iphone) and made dialogue a task which required much less effort. how the device works The Simon was equipped with a touch-screen and had many functions we can see in our phones today. There is not much to say about how it works: everything you need is on the screen, and you do not have to worry about how it functions in the technical part. additional information Canova was working at IBM when he realised that chip-and-wireless technology was small enough to use in a hand-held device. The company demonstrated the smartphone under the code-name ‘Angler’ in November of that year at the COMDEX computer industry trade show. The device was an immediate success at the show and Canova found himself on the front of the money section of USA Today, pictured holding the phone. It was released under the name Simon in August 1994 and patented by Canova and other team members in 1995 with a priority date of 13 November 1992. As the originator of the idea for the IBM Simon, Canova has been described as the inventor of the smartphone.
