The agricultural growing season ranges from 120 to 180 days. Dairy farming is the primary source of agricultural income. The average dairy farm produced 1. 3 million pounds of milk annually in 2008. Wine industry in Vermont started in 1985. As of 2007, there were 14 wineries. Manufacturing Vermont's largest for-profit employer, IBM, in Essex Junction, provides 25 percent of all manufacturing jobs in Vermont, employing 5, 000 workers in 2013. It is responsible for $1 billion of the state's annual economy. A 2010 University of Connecticut study reported that Vermont, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire tied as the most costly states in the U. S. for manufacturers. Tourism Tourism is an important industry to the state. For example, some of the largest ski areas in New England are located in Vermont. In 2011, the state government earned $274 million in taxes and fees from tourism.
