Verbs of sensory perception or senses

TO SEE

• To notice people and things with your eyes e. g.: Now I see you (Теперь я тебя вижу) • To understand something e. g.: I see what you mean (Я понимаю, что ты имеешь в виду) • To see = to date e. g.: I’m seeing Peter (Я встречаюсь с Питером) • To see = have an appointment with e. g.: I’m seeing my dentist next week (У меня назначен приём к стоматологу на следующей неделе) • To see off = to take home e. g.: I am seeing you off (Я тебя провожаю) • To see of = to view e. g.: I was seeing the sights of Boston when I met Kevin (Я рассматривала достопримечательности Бостона, когда встретила Кевина)

TO FEEL

• To touch something, especially with your hands, in order to examine it e. g.: He felt her ankle to see if it was broken (Он потрогал её лодыжку, чтобы посмотреть сломана она или нет) • To express your opinion e. g.: I feel that this is not the best use of our time (Я думаю, что это не самое лучшее использование нашего времени) • To want something, or want to do something e. g.: I feel like some chocolate (Мне хочется чего-нибудь шоколадного) • To experience an emotion or a physical feeling e. g.: Are you feeling better? (Тебе лучше? )

TO TASTE

• To have a certain taste e. g.: The coffee tastes really bitter (Кофе на вкус очень горький) • The action of tasting e. g.: The chef is tasting the soup (Шеф-повар пробует суп )

TO SMELL

• To notice something by using your nose e. g.: I think I can smell something burning (Мне кажется, я чувствую запах гари) • To have the ability to notice smells e. g.: Come and smell these flowers (Подойди и понюхай эти цветы)

TO FIT

• To be the right shape or size for someone or something e. g.: These trousers don't fit any more (Эти брюки не налезают на меня больше) • To fit = to attach e. g.: I fit a trailer to the car (Я прицепил трейлер к машине)

TO HEAR

• To be aware of a sound through your ears e. g.: I could hear his voice in the distance (Я мог слышать его голос на расстоянии)  

TO SOUND

• To make a noise e. g.: If the alarm sounds, you must leave the building immediately (Если прозвучит сигнал тревоги, вы должны немедленно покинуть здание) • To seem like something, from what you have heard or read e. g.: That sounds like a really good idea (Это звучит как очень хорошая идея)  

VERBS OF FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS

TO LOVE

• To like someone very much and have romantic feelings for them e. g.: He loves animals (Он любит животных)

TO HATE

• To dislike (something) very strongly: to find (something) very unpleasant e. g.: She hates cats (Она ненавидит кошек)

TO LIKE

• To enjoy something or feel that someone or something is pleasant e. g.: I like to paint in my spare time (Я люблю/ мне нравится рисовать в свободное время)

TO ADORE

• To love someone and have a very good opinion of them e. g: I adore travelling (Я обожаю путешествовать)  

TO DISLIKE

• To not like someone or something e. g: I dislike ironing (Я не люблю гладить одежду)  

TO FEAR

• To be worried or frightened that something bad might happen • To be frightened of something or someone unpleasant e. g: Most older employees fear unemployment (Большинство пожилых сотрудников боятся безработицы)  

TO CARE

• To think that something is important and to feel interested in it or worried about it e. g: He cares deeply about the environment (Он заботится об окружающей среде)  

VERBS OF POSSESSION

TO HAVE

• To own something e. g: I have two horses (У меня есть две лошади) In phrases like: • To have (= to eat/drink) something           e. g.: James is having coffee with his friend      (Джеймс пьёт кофе со своим другом) • To have (= to take) a shower e. g.: Kate is having a shower now, so she cannot answer the phone (Кейт сейчас в душе, поэтому она не может ответить на звонок) • etc

TO BELONG

• To be in the right place e. g.: That chair belongs in the dining room (Это кресло принадлежит столовой )

TO POSSESS

• To have or own something e. g.: He was found guilty of possessing an illegal weapon (Он был признан виновным в хранении незаконного оружия)

TO OWN

• To have something that legally belongs to you e. g.: The University owns a lot of the land around here (Университет владеет большим количеством земли вокруг)

Verbs of mental processes

To remember

• If you remember a fact or something from the past, you keep it in your mind, or bring it back into your mind e. g.: She remembers everything (Она помнит всё) • To remember =trying to remember • e. g.: He’s remembering what she said (Он пытается вспомнить, что она сказала)

To forget

• To be unable to remember a fact, something that happened, or how to do something e. g.: I've forgotten his name (Я забыла его имя)

To understand

• To know the meaning of something that someone says • To know why or how something happens or works • To know how someone feels or why they behave in a particular way e. g.: She didn't understand so I explained it again (Она не понимала, поэтому я объяснил это еще раз)

To know

• To have knowledge or information about something in your mind e. g.: I know math very good (Я знаю математику очень хорошо) • To be familiar with a person, place, or thing because you have met them, been there, used it, etc before e. g.: I've known Tim since primary school (Я знаю Тима с начальной школы)

To mean

• To have a particular sense e. g.: The red light means stop (Красный свет означает " стой" ) • To intend to express a fact or opinion e. g.: What exactly do you mean by 'old-fashioned'? (Что именно вы подразумеваете под " старомодный"? )

To realize

• To notice or understand something that you did not notice or understand before e. g.: I suddenly realized I'd met him before (Я вдруг понял, что я встречался с ним раньше)

Tothink

• To have an opinion about something or someone e. g.: I think she is very beautiful (Я думаю, она очень красивая) • To consider an idea or a problem e. g.: You should think about where you want to live ( Ты должен думать о том, где хочешь жить. ) • To think = process of intellectual work e. g.: She is thinking about her future plans (Она думает о своих будущих плана+-)

To believe

• To think that something is true, or that what someone says is true e. g.: Do you believe him? (Ты ему веришь? ) • To think something, without being completely sure • To have religious beliefs

To suppose

• To be expected or intended to do something, especially when this does not happen e. g.: These drugs are supposed to reduce the pain (Эти препараты должны уменьшить боль) • If you are supposed to do something, the rules say that you should do it

To consider

• To think carefully about a decision or something you might do e. g.: We're considering buying a new car (Мы подумываем о покупке нового автомобиля) • To have a particular opinion about someone or something e. g.: I don't consider myself to be a great athlete (Я не считаю себя великим спортсменом)

Other verbs

To want

• To hope to have or do something, or to wish for something e. g.: He wants a new car (он хочет новую машину) • To need something e. g.: This soup wants more salt (Этому супу необходимо добавить соль)

To prefer

• To like someone or something more than another person or thing e. g.: I prefer dogs to cats (Я предпочитаю кошкам собак)

To weight

• To know how heavy someone or something is e. g.: I weight 60 kg (Я вешу 60 кг) • To weight = process e. g.: Why are you weighting your cat? (Почему ты взвешиваешь своего кота? )

To look (like)

• Used to say that something is likely to happen e. g.: It looks as if he isn't coming (Похоже, что он не придёт) • Have the appearance or give the impression of being e. g.: She looks tired (Она выглядит усталой) You look like a businessman (Ты выглядишь как бизнесмен) • To look = watch • e. g.: Why are you looking at me? (Почему ты смотришь на меня? )

To cost

• The amount of money that you need to buy or do something e. g.: The cruise ship was built at a cost of $400 million (Круизное судно было построено за $400 миллионов)

To need

• If you need something, you must have it, and if you need to do something, you must do it e. g.: I need some new shoes (Мне нужны новые туфли)

To contain

• If one thing contains another, it has it inside it • To have something as a part e. g.: Does this drink contain alcohol? (Этот напиток содержит алкоголь? )
