Teen unemployment this summer is at a record high, and young people are feeling it in their pockets. MSNBC. com reports that a new analysis by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicates that teen hit 26. 1 percent in July, making it the worst summer hiring season for teens since 1949. " The teens are facing competition, from people in their early 20s particularly, who are taking some of those better teen jobs that usually they leave alone, " noted John Challenger, the firm's CEO, who was quoted by MSNBC. com. John McLaughlin, senior research associate with the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, added that the numbers might actually be worse: As teens get discouraged, they looking for jobs and are no longer counted as being among the unemployed. " To be unemployed you have to be in the labour force, " McLaughlin explained to MSNBC. com. " What we find is that when we have low levels of teen unemployment, teens just tend to withdraw from the labour force. So they just stop looking. They perceive there'll be no jobs there. " Some areas of the country are trying to deal with even higher teen unemployment . San Ramon Patch reports that in California, teenage unemployment rose to 34. 5 percent this past June. Jenny Kim, 19, was quoted as saying that her former job experience, many employers didn't even give her the to apply. Chris Farrell, writing for Bloomberg Businessweek, points out that the lack of job opportunities " is potentially disastrous" for the long-term prospects of low-income minority teens in particular. He noted that many minority youth live in the urban areas, while low-wage, entry-level jobs tend to be more available in the suburbs. " You are really creating a society of people don't know what work is like, " said Robert Straits, director of the Employment Management Services Division at the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, who was quoted by Businessweek.
