The Loch Ness Monster.

Speaking Activity

English, No. 2, p. 54

Classroom Activity: work in pairs

Language Level: intermediate, upper-intermediate, advanced

Age: 10+

Time: 30 minutes

Target: speaking practice, Second Conditional

Anticipated Problems: As far as the activity involves the whole class, the teacher might be short of time to follow all the mistakes the students might be making during the discussion. Therefore, it is advisable that the teacher should take notes while listening to what the students say.

Procedure:

1. Explain the rules of Second Conditional (can also be done one lesson in advance).

2. Then tell the students a pre-story: Have you ever seen the Loch Ness Monster? Lots of people have reported sighting a large animal in the world-famous lake called Loch Ness which is located in northern Scotland. Nobody knows for sure whether this creature exists or not, but over 14 centuries, people have been trying to capture it. In the last 60 years there has been some evidence that the Loch Ness Monster might exist. Scientists have been searching the lake with up-to-date underwater equipment, trying to discover what kind of animal lives there. Unfortunately, they haven’t managed to find it yet, because the lake is so deep and dark.

3. Ask your students to imagine what they would do if they ever saw The Loch Ness Monster in reality.

4. Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a set of cards with pictures and phrases.

5. Each student in a pair asks a question in Second Conditional “What would you do if you saw The Loch Ness Monster? ”

6. Then both of them give their answers in Second Conditional according to the information they have in their cards and also give explanations why they would do it.

For example: If I saw the Loch Ness Monster I would probably get really scared because I am afraid of big animals.
