Rostov- on- Don.

Rostov – on- Don was founded in 1749 as a customs house. 12 years later a fortress named after Dmitry Rostovsky was built there. The city was named in his honour. Rostov is situated on the right bank of the river Don. Rostov appeared as trade centre which developed rapidly. By the end of the 19^th century Rostov had become the industrial centre.

During the Great Patriotic War Rostov was almost completely ruined. More than 40 thousand of Rostovites were killed. Many large industrial enterprises of the city were destroyed.

In a few years the city was fully restored and it became even better than it had been before. For outstanding success in labour, for courage, displayed in the fight against fascism Rostov –on-Don was awarded the Order of Lenin and Order of the Patriotic War or the First Degree.

Now Rostov-on-Don is a big industrial centre. The leading branch of industry is machine-building. It is also a large scientific centre.

In Rostov there are four theatres: the Academic Drama theatre named after M. Gorky, the Puppet theatre, the Theatre for Young Spectators, the Musical Comedy theatre and there is also Documentary Film Studio, a lot of stadiums.

And the city is developing.
