Сокращения:

I would = I’d he would = he’d they would = they’d etc.

If it was late, the child would be sleepy. – Если бы было поздно, ребенок был бы сонным. (Но сейчас еще не поздно)

We’d get wet soon if it was raining harder. – Мы бы быстро промокли, если бы дождь был сильнее. (Но дождь идет не очень сильный)

She could study better if she didn’t miss lessons. – Она могла бы учиться лучше, если бы она не пропускала уроки. (Но она пропускает уроки)

Заметьте, что глагол could может встречаться как в главном предложе­нии, так и в придаточном:

If I could sing, I could take part in the concert. – Если бы я умел петь, я бы мог принять участие в концерте. (Но я не умею петь)

В условных предложениях второго типа глагол be может употребляться в форме were для всех лиц и чисел:

If it was / were cold, we wouldn’t go for a walk. – Если бы было холодно, мы бы не пошли гулять. (Но сейчас не холодно)

If I was / were you, I’d follow his advice. – На твоем месте я бы последовал его совету. (Но я не на твоем месте)

 

would + V образует условное наклонение и может использоваться без if -части, например:

I would watch this film. – Я бы посмотрел этот фильм.

I’d prefer to live in the country. – Я бы предпочел жить загородом.

    Exercise 1. Put in the verb in the necessary form: 1. If you ………………….. (like) this book, I would give you another book by this author. 2. I would phone him if you ………………….. (know) his phone number. 3. I ………………….. (be) a better swimmer if I went swimming more often. 4. If he could dance, he ………………….. (go) to the disco. 5. If I ………………….. (hear) the phone ring, I’d defi­nitely answer it. 6. If the ice was thick enough, we ………………….. (can) walk across the river.   Exercise 2. Rewrite the sentences using Conditional 2: Example: He likes swimming; that’s why he goes to the swimming pool every day. – If he didn’t like swimming, he wouldn’t go to the swimming pool every day. 1. She’s very clever; that’s why she gets only good marks. 2. He doesn’t do sports; that’s why he is often ill. 3. They don’t have much money, so they can’t buy an expensive car. 4. We haven’t got any apples so we can’t make an apple pie. 5. They don’t clean the windows, so the rooms are dark. 6. I don’t know his address, so I can’t write to him.     Exercise 3. Put in the verb in the necessary form: 1. We ………………….. (go) to the football match with you if we ………………….. (have) free time. 2. If she ………………….. (not/eat) so many sweets, she ………………….. (not/be) so fat. 3. If you ………………….. (cannot) help us, we ………………….. (ask) Mike. 4. The weather ………………….. (be) better if it ………………….. (not/be) so windy. 5. You ………………….. (know) English much better if you ………………….. (practice) it every day. 6. …….. Mary ………….. (come) if I ………………….. (invite) her? 7. If there ………………….. (not / be) so many cars, the air ………………….. (be) much cleaner.   Exercise 4. Rewrite the sentences using Conditional 2: 1. She likes children, so she wants to be a teacher. 2. She buys expensive clothes because she’s got a lot of money. 3. Pete is very naughty and his mother is often angry with him. 4. I’m ill, so I can’t go for a walk. 5. Ann knows so much because she reads a lot. 6. I don’t go to fast food restaurants because I don’t like hamburgers. 7. My aunt lives in our street, so she can visit us often.
