The importance of ethical rules.

Everyone who studies psychology at university dreams about being a professional psychologist. But there are different types of this profession. Some of the students want to be a scientists and workingat university or laboratory providing conductingexperiments. Others want to be a counsellorsor a coaches, helping people to be more positive and productive. Although there is a part of the students who are keen on being a psychotherapist and providing serious therapy, helping people to overcome their disease. But psychotherapist should understand that he or she is responsible for client’s health. (Laura S. Brown[AL1] ). Of course, working with people, especially when it is therapy, needs to have some rules. So, the question is do areethical rules are really important or are they are just making the work easier to dosimplify psychologists’ work. Personally, I think that this topic is important because working with people is hard but it seems to be harder when a person comes to you with his or her problems and tells you all about him or herself. And what if he wants to kill someone, or he or she is a child who was abused and wants to commit suicide. Every psychologist should know what to do in each situation.

First of all, I want to say that ethical codex is now exists. It is called Code of Human Research Ethics in Great Britain and consists of some rules that every psychologist should follow. For example, confidentiality, responsibility or «The group psychotherapist shall provide the potential group patient/client with information about the nature of group psychotherapy and apprise him or her of the risks, rights and obligations as a member of a therapy group» (American Group Psychotherapy Association, 2020). There were plenty of tricky situations where it is hard to find a good decision and psychologist in his/her actions should refer to these rules. In Russia these rules are made by The Russian Psychological Society. Many people have heard about the situation where a male was brought as a female.
Bruce lost his genitals in childhood and his parents did not know what to do. They’ve found a psychologist named John Money who suggested to raise the boy as a girl. This was his cruel experiment, he wanted to prove his theory about genders. But he understood that he was wrong when Brenda (Bruce) started to behave as a boy but he had not done anything. There was so much stress this family had gone through and Bruce got serious Suicide syndrome. At the end Brenda who started identify herself as a boy committed suicide at the age of 38. This case shows us the importance of ethical rules and because of such situations this topic seems to be very interesting to study.

I consider that the ethical rules should be used by each and every psychologist. Because there are many controversial situations where these rules can save someone’s mental health. When you come to the psychotherapist and you are sure that there are some memories or topics that you don’t want to discuss or there are some kinds of therapy that you don’t want to participate in. In this case you are free to make a written agreement with you therapist about things you want or don’t want to do. I think this is the most popular application to these rules.

Of course, like all of the rules, it has some contradictions. For example, when you client tells you that he or she wants to kill someone. On the one hand you should keep privacy of your client, on the other hand what if you client will really kill someone? This controversial problem needs to be solved with the help of ethical rules but what if they are contradictory too? And because of these cases and tricky situations we should make more investigations on it.

In conclusion I would like to say that this topic is really interesting and useful. It can help psychotherapists and their clients to make good and trustful relationships. Also, it helps to solve many ethical problems because working with people always needs to have some rules. And, of course, there are a lot to study in this topic because we need more precedents to make the right decisions in each situation. That’s why this topic is important and makes many people to be interested in it.
