THE SPOILS OF WAR 8: 21 - 8: 37

36.

20. O you who believe!

Obey God and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him when you hear.

37.

21. And be not like those who say, “We hear, ” when they do not hear.

38.

22. The worst of animals to God are the deaf and dumb—those who do not reason.

39.

23. Had God recognized any good in them, He would have made them hear;

and had He made them hear, they would have turned away defiantly.

40.

24. O you who believe!

Respond to God and to the Messenger when He calls you to what will revive you.

41.

And know that God stands between a man and his heart,

and that to Him you will be gathered.

42.

25. And beware of discord which does not afflict the wrongdoers among you exclusively;

and know that God is severe in retribution.

43.

26. And remember when you were few,

oppressed in the land, fearing that people may capture you;

yet He sheltered you, and supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things—

so that you may be thankful.

44.

27. O you who believe!

Do not betray God and the Messenger,

nor betray your trusts, while you know.

45.

28. And know that your possessions and your children are a test,

and that God possesses an immense reward.

46.

29. O you who believe!

If you remain conscious of God, He will give you a criterion,

and will remit from you your sins, and will forgive you.

47.

God is possessor of infinite grace.

48.

30. When the disbelievers plotted against you, to imprison you, or kill you, or expel you.

49.

They planned, and God planned, but God is the Best of planners.

50.

31. And when Our revelations are recited to them, they say,

“We have heard. Had we wanted, we could have said the like of this;

these are nothing but myths of the ancients. ”

51.

32. And they said, “Our God, if this is the truth from You,

then rain down on us stones from the sky, or visit us with a painful affliction. ”

52.

33. But God would not punish them while you are amongst them.

53.

And God would not punish them as long as they seek forgiveness.

54.

34. Yet why should God not punish them,

when they are turning others away from the Sacred Mosque, although they are not its custodians?

55.

Its rightful custodians are the pious;

but most of them do not know.

56.

35. Their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping

—so taste the punishment for your blasphemy.

57.

36. Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to repel from God’s path.

58.

They will spend it, then it will become a source of sorrow for them,

and then they will be defeated.

59.

Those who disbelieve will be herded into Hell.

37. That God may distinguish the bad from the good,

and heap the bad on top of one another, and pile them together, and throw them in Hell.

60.

These are the losers.

The Spoils of War                                                                                             CHAPTER THREE

Divisions 61-85

THE SPOILS OF WAR 8: 38 - 8: 48

61.

38. Say to those who disbelieve:

if they desist, their past will be forgiven.

62.

Yet if they persist—the practice of the ancients has passed away.

63.

39. Fight them until there is no more persecution,

and religion becomes exclusively for God.

64.

Yet if they desist—God is Seeing of what they do.

65.

40. And if they turn away, know that God is your Protector.

The Best Protector, and the Best Supporter.

66.

41. And know that whatever spoils you gain, to God belongs its fifth,

and to the Messenger, and the relatives,

and the orphans, and the poor, and to the wayfarer,

provided you believe in God and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of Distinction,

the day when the two armies met.

67.

God is Capable of everything.

68.

42. Recall when you were on the nearer bank,

and they were on the further bank, and the caravan was below you.

69.

Had you planned for this meeting, you would have disagreed on the timing,

but God was to carry out a predetermined matter,

so that those who perish would perish by clear evidence,

and those who survive would survive by clear evidence.

70.

God is Hearing and Knowing.

71.

43. God made them appear in your dream as few.

72.

Had He made them appear as many, you would have lost heart, and disputed in the matter.

73.

But God saved the situation.

74.

He knows what the hearts contain.

75.

44. When you met, He made them appear as few in your eyes,

and made you appear fewer in their eyes,

so that God may conclude a predetermined matter.

76.

To God all matters revert.

77.

45. O you who believe! When you meet a force,

stand firm, and remember God much, so that you may prevail.

78.

46. And obey God and His Messenger, and do not dispute,

lest you falter and lose your courage.

79.

And be steadfast.

80.

God is with the steadfast.

81.

47. And do not be like those who left their homes boastfully,

showing off before the people, and barring others from the path of God.

82.

God comprehends what they do.

83.

48. Satan made their deeds appear good to them, and said,

“You cannot be defeated by any people today, and I am at your side. ”

84.

Yet when the two armies came in sight of one another,

he turned on his heels, and said, “I am innocent of you;

85.

I see what you do not see;

I fear God; for God is severe in punishment. ”

Divisions 86-110

THE SPOILS OF WAR 8: 49 - 8: 63

86.

49. The hypocrites and those in whose hearts is sickness said,

“Their religion has deluded these people. ”

87.

Yet whoever puts his trust in God—God is Mighty and Wise.

88.

50. If only you could see, as the angels take away those who disbelieve,

striking their faces and their backs:

“Taste the agony of the Burning. ”

89.

51. “That is because of what your hands have committed,

and because God is not unjust to the servants. ”

90.

52. Like the behavior of the people of Pharaoh, and those before them.

91.

They rejected the signs of God, so God seized them for their sins.

God is Powerful, Severe in punishment.

92.

53. That is because God would never change a blessing He has bestowed on a people

unless they change what is within themselves,

and because God is Hearing and Knowing.

93.

54. Such was the case with the people of Pharaoh, and those before them.

94.

They denied the signs of their Lord, so We annihilated them for their wrongs,

and We drowned the people of Pharaoh—they were all evildoers.

95.

55. The worst of creatures in God's view are those who disbelieve.

96.

They have no faith.

97.

56. Those of them with whom you made a treaty,

yet they violate their agreement every time.

98.

They are not righteous.

99.

57. If you confront them in battle,

make of them a fearsome example for those who follow them, that they may take heed.

100.

58. If you fear treachery on the part of a people,

break off with them in a like manner.

101.

God does not like the treacherous.

102.

59. Let not the disbelievers assume that they are ahead.

103.

They will not escape.

104.

60. And prepare against them all the power you can muster,

and all the cavalry you can mobilize,

to terrify thereby God’s enemies and your enemies,

and others besides them whom you do not know, but God knows them.

105.

Whatever you spend in God’s way will be repaid to you in full,

and you will not be wronged.

106.

61. But if they incline towards peace,

then incline towards it, and put your trust in God.

He is the Hearer, the Knower.

107.

62. If they intend to deceive you—God is sufficient for you.

108.

It is He who supported you with His aid, and with the believers.

109.

63. And He united their hearts.

110.

Had you spent everything on earth, you would not have united their hearts,

but God united them together.

He is Mighty and Wise.

The Spoils of War                                                                                                 CHAPTER FIVE

Divisions 111-135

THE SPOILS OF WAR 8: 64 - 8: 75

111.

64. O prophet! Count on God, and on the believers who have followed you.

112.

65. O prophet! Rouse the believers to battle.

113.

If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will defeat two hundred;

and if there are a hundred of you, they will defeat a thousand of those who disbelieve;

because they are a people who do not understand.

114.

66. God has now lightened your burden, knowing that there is weakness in you.

115.

If there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will defeat two hundred;

and if there are a thousand of you, they will defeat two thousand by God’s leave.

116.

God is with the steadfast.

117.

67. It is not for a prophet to take prisoners before he has subdued the land.

118.

You desire the materials of this world,

yet God desires the Hereafter.

God is Strong and Wise.

119.

68. Were it not for a predetermined decree from God,

an awful punishment would have afflicted you for what you have taken.

120.

69. So consume what you have gained, legitimate and wholesome;

and remain conscious of God.

God is Forgiving and Merciful.

121.

70. O prophet! Say to those that you hold prisoners,

“If God finds any good in your hearts,

He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you.

122.

God is Forgiving and Merciful. ”

123.

71. Yet if they intend to betray you, they have already betrayed God,

and He has overpowered them.

124.

God is Knowing and Wise.

125.

72. Those who believed, and emigrated,

and struggled in God’s cause with their possessions and their persons,

and those who provided shelter and support—these are allies of one another.

126.

As for those who believed, but did not emigrate,

you owe them no protection, until they have emigrated.

127.

Yet if they ask you for help in religion, you must come to their aid,

except against a people with whom you have a treaty.

God is Seeing of what you do.

129.

73. As for those who disbelieve, they are allies of one another.

130.

Unless you do this, there will be turmoil in the land, and much corruption.

131.

74. Those who believed, and emigrated, and struggled for God’s cause,

and those who gave shelter and support—these are the true believers.

132.

They will have forgiveness, and a bountiful provision.

133.

75. As for those who believed afterwards, and emigrated and struggled with you

—these belong with you.

But family members are nearer to one another in the Book of God.

135.

God is Cognizant of everything.

Repentance                                                                                                             CHAPTER ONE

Divisions 1-25

REPENTANCE 9: 1 - 9: 11

1.

1. A declaration of legal immunity

from God and His Messenger,

to the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty.

2.

2. So travel the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape God,

and that God will disgrace the disbelievers.

3.

3. And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to the people

on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage,

that God has disowned the polytheists, and so did His Messenger.

4.

If you repent, it will be better for you.

5.

Yet if you turn away, know that you cannot escape God.

6.

And announce to those who disbelieve a painful punishment.

7.

4. Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty,

and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you.

8.

So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term.

9.

God loves the righteous.

10.

5. When the Sacred Months have passed,

[kill] [attack] the [wicked] polytheists [and infidels] wherever you find them.

11.

And capture them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush.

12.

Yet if they sincerely repent, and perform the prayers, and pay the alms,

then let them go their way.

13.

God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

14.

6. And if anyone of the polytheists asks you for protection,

give him protection so that he may hear the Word of God;

then escort him to his place of safety.

15.

That is because they are a people who do not know.

16.

7. How can there be a treaty with the polytheists on the part of God and His Messenger,

except for those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque?

17.

As long as they are upright with you, be upright with them.

18.

God loves the pious.

19.

8. How can there be a treaty?

Whenever they overcome you, they respect neither kinship nor treaty with you.

20.

They satisfy you with lip service,

yet their hearts refuse, and most of them are immoral.

21.

9. They traded away God's revelations for a cheap price,

so they barred others from His path.

22.

How evil is what they did.

23.

10. Towards a believer they respect neither kinship nor treaty.

24.

These are the transgressors.

25.

11. Yet if they repent, and perform the prayers, and give the obligatory charity,

then they are your brethren in faith.

Repentance                                                                                                             CHAPTER TWO

Divisions 26-50

REPENTANCE 9: 11 - 9: 22

26.

We detail the revelations for a people who know.

27.

12. Yet if they violate their oaths after their pledge, and attack your religion,

then fight the leaders of disbelief—they have no faith—so that they may desist.

28.

13. Will you not fight a people who violated their oaths,

and planned to exile the Messenger, and initiated hostilities against you?

29.

Do you fear them?

30.

It is God you should fear, if you are believers.

31.

14. Fight them.

32.

God will punish them at your hands, and humiliate them,

and help you against them, and heal the hearts of a believing people.

33.

15. And He will remove the anger of their hearts.

34.

God redeems whomever He wills.

35.

God is Knowledgeable and Wise.

36.

16. Or do you think that you will be left alone,

without God identifying which of you will strive,

and take no supporters apart from God, His Messenger, and the believers?

37.

God is well Aware of what you do.

38.

17. It is not for the polytheists to attend God’s places of worship while professing their disbelief.

39.

These—their works are in vain, and in the Fire they will abide.

40.

18. The only people to attend God’s places of worship

are those who believe in God and the Last Day,

41.

and that pray regularly, and practice regular charity, and fear none but God.

42.

These are most likely to be guided.

43.

19. Do you consider giving water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque

the same as believing in God and the Last Day and striving in God’s path?

44.

They are not equal in God’s sight.

45.

God does not guide the unjust people.

46.

20. Those who believe, and emigrate,

and strive in God’s path with their possessions and their persons,

are of a higher rank with God.

47.

These are the winners.

48.

21. Their Lord announces to them good news of mercy from Him, and acceptance,

and gardens wherein they will have lasting bliss.

49.

22. Abiding therein forever.

50.

With God is a great reward.

Repentance                                                                                                         CHAPTER THREE

Divisions 51-75

REPENTANCE 9: 23 - 9: 33

51.

23. O you who believe!

Do not ally yourselves with your parents and your siblings if they prefer disbelief to belief.

52.

Whoever of you allies himself with them—these are the wrongdoers.

53.

24. Say to them,

“If your parents, and your children, and your siblings,

and your spouses, and your relatives,

and the wealth you have acquired,

54.

and a business you worry about,

and homes you love,

are more dear to you than God, and His Messenger, and the struggle in His cause,

then wait until God exercises His judgment. ”

55.

God does not guide the sinful people.

56.

25. God has given you victory in numerous regions;

yet on the day of Hunayn, your great number impressed you, yet it availed you nothing;

57.

and the land, as spacious as it was, narrowed for you;

and you turned your backs in retreat.

58.

26. Then God sent down His serenity upon His Messenger, and upon the believers;

and He sent down troops you did not see;

and He punished those who disbelieved.

59.

Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

60.

27. Then, after that, God will relent towards whomever He wills.

61.

God is Forgiving and Merciful.

62.

28. O you who believe!

The polytheists are polluted, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs.

63.

And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His grace, if He wills.

64.

God is Aware and Wise.

65.

29. Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day,

nor that forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden,

nor abide by the religion of truth

—from among those who received the Scripture—

until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly.

66.

30. The Jews said, “Ezra is the son of God, ”                the Book of Esdras describes the Messiah

and the Christians said, “The Messiah is the son of God. ”

67.

These are their statements, out of their mouths.

68.

They emulate the statements of those who blasphemed before.

69.

May God assail them! How deceived they are!

70.

31. They have taken their rabbis and their priests as lords instead of God,

as well as the Messiah son of Mary.

71.

Although they were commanded to worship none but The One God.

72.

There is no god except He.

73.

Glory be to Him; High above what they associate with Him.

74.

32. They want to extinguish God’s light with their mouths,

yet God refuses except to complete His light, even though the disbelievers dislike it.

75.

33. It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth,

in order to make it prevail over all religions, even though the idolaters dislike it.

Repentance                                                                                                           CHAPTER FOUR

Divisions 76-110

REPENTANCE 9: 34 - 9: 47

76.

34. O you who believe!

Many of the rabbis and priests consume people's wealth illicitly, and hinder from God’s path.

77.

Those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend them in God’s cause,

inform them of a painful punishment.

78.

35. On the Day when they will be heated in the Fire of Hell,

then their foreheads, and their sides, and their backs will be branded with them:

79.

“This is what you hoarded for yourselves;

so taste what you used to hoard. ”

80.

36. The number of months, according to God, is twelve months—in the decree of God—

since the Day He created the heavens and the earth, of which four months are sacred.

81.

This is the correct religion.

82.

So do not wrong yourselves during them.

83.

And fight the polytheists collectively, as they fight you collectively,

and know that God is with the righteous.

84.

37. Postponement is an increase in disbelief—by which those who disbelieve are led astray.

85.

They allow it one year, and forbid it another year,

in order to conform to the number made sacred by God, thus permitting what God has forbidden.

86.

The evil of their deeds seems good to them.

87.

God does not guide the disbelieving people.

88.

38. O you who believe!

What is the matter with you, when it is said to you,

“Mobilize in the cause of God, ” that you cling heavily to the earth?

89.

Do you prefer the present life to the Hereafter?

90.

The enjoyment of the present life, compared to the Hereafter, is only a little.

91.

39. Unless you mobilize, He will punish you [most painfully],

and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all.

92.

God has power over all things.

93.

40. If you do not help him, God has already helped him,

when those who disbelieved expelled him,

and he was the second of two hidden in the cave.

94.

[Mohammed] said to his friend, “Do not worry, God is with us. ”

95.

And God made His tranquility descend upon him,

and supported him with forces you did not see,

and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of God is the Highest.

96.

God is Mighty and Wise.

97.

41. Mobilize, light or heavy,

and strive with your possessions and your lives in the cause of God.

98.

That is better for you, if you only knew.

99.

42. Had the gain been immediate, and the journey shorter, they would have followed you;

but the distance seemed too long for them.

100.

Still they swear by God:

“Had we been able, we would have marched out with you. ”

101.

They damn their own souls, and God knows that they are lying.

102.

43. May God pardon you!

103.

Why did you give them permission

before it became clear to you who are the truthful ones, and who are the liars?

104.

44. Those who believe in God and the Last Day

do not ask you for exemption from striving with their possessions and their lives.

105.

God is fully aware of the righteous.

106.

45. Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask you for exemption.

107.

Their hearts are full of doubts, so they waver in their doubts.

108.

46. Had they wanted to mobilize, they would have made preparations for it;

yet God disliked their participation, so he held them back, and it was said,

“Stay behind with those who stay behind. ”

109.

47. Had they mobilized with you, they would have added only to your difficulties,

and they would have spread rumors in your midst, trying to sow discord among you.

110.

Some of you are avid listeners to them.

God is Aware of the wrongdoers.

Repentance                                                                                                             CHAPTER FIVE

Divisions 111-140

REPENTANCE 9: 48 - 9: 61

111.

48. They tried to cause conflict before, and they hatched plots against you,

until the truth prevailed, and the command of God became evident—in spite of their dislike.

112.

49. Among them is he who says, “Excuse me, and do not trouble me. ”

113.

In fact, they sunk into trouble.

114.

In fact, Hell will engulf the disbelievers.

115.

50. If something good happens to you, it upsets them;

and if a calamity befalls you, they say,

“We took our precautions in advance, ”

and they depart, happy.

116.

51. Say to them, “Nothing will happen to us except what God has ordained for us;

He is our Protector. ”

117.

In God let the faithful put their trust.

118.

52. Say to them, “Are you expecting for us anything other than one of the two excellences?

119.

As for us:

we are expecting that God will afflict you with a punishment from Himself, or at our hands.

120.

So wait, we are waiting with you. ”

121.

53. Say to them, “Whether you spend willingly or unwillingly,

it will not be accepted from you.

122.

You are evil people. ”

123.

54. What prevents the acceptance of their contributions

is nothing except the fact that they disbelieved in God and His Messenger,

and that they do not approach the prayer except lazily,

and that they do not spend except grudgingly.

124.

55. Let neither their possessions nor their children impress you.

125.

God intends to torment them through them in this worldly life,

and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.

126.

56. They swear by God that they are of you.

Yet they are not of you.

127.

They are divisive people.

128.

57. Were they to find a shelter, or a cave, or a hideout,

they would go to it, rushing.

129.

Yet it is more proper for them to please God and His Messenger, if they are believers.

130.

58. And among them are those who criticize you in regard to charities.

131.

If they are given some of it, they become pleased;
