MODERN POETRY

Rupert Chawner Brooke (middle name sometimes given as " Chaucer"; 3 August 1887 – 23 April 1915[) was an English poet known for his idealistic war sonnets written during the First World War, especially " The Soldier". He was also known for his boyish good looks, which were said to have prompted the Irish poet W. B. Yeats to describe him as " the handsomest young man in England"

The Honourable Julian Henry Francis Grenfell (30 March 1888 – 26 May 1915), was a British soldier and poet of World War I. Grenfell perhaps represented the last generation of young men for whom war was considered mainly to bring glory rather than suffering.

Wilfred Edward Salter Owen (18 March 1893 – 4 November 1918) was an English poet and soldier, one of the leading poets of the First World War. Among his best-known works – most of which were published posthumously – are " Dulce et Decorum est", " Insensibility", " Anthem for Doomed Youth", " Futility" and " Strange Meeting".

William Butler Yeats (/ˈ jeɪ ts/; 13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and founded the Abbey Theatre. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as " inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation. " Yeats is generally considered one of the few writers who completed their greatest works after being awarded the Nobel Prize; such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems(1929).
