New Year in two different cultures

1. New Year in Russia is a public holiday. Everyone has weekend [й1] during the holiday. People decorate the Christmas tree and set the table with different delicious food. There is baked duck, Russian salad Olivier and herring under a fur coat[й2]. Mandarins[й3] on the table is as a symbol of the New Year. On New Year's Eve, people are waiting for the appeal of the President of Russia [й4] and chimes. After that many of them go for a walk and start up mesmerizing fireworks.

As for my family, we always spend New Year together. We stay at home and enjoy Christmas atmosphere.

New Year in Russia is the most important and long holiday. It is celebrated on December 31^st. It is a time when it is snowing and light frost. Everyone has the Christmas tree in the house. People decorate it with bright Christmas decorations, balls, tinsel. People always put a star or spade on top of the Christmas tree. In the evening all people get together with family or friends and wait for New Year’s night when the president will say congratulations and break the chimes[й7]. People celebrate New Year all night, walk and congratulate each other. Volleys of fireworks continue until the morning.

4. In both countries the New Year is very important day. They celebrate it with a special spirit. But there are different customs. In Scotland people open the door after midnight and wait the first person. The first foot has to bring three very important things: shortbread, coal and something to drink. In China people just carefully preparing for the celebration of the New Year.
