Outside your comfort zone?

1. Consider the two sentences. Think about the meaning of the underlined words. In what way are they different?

A. Giving a talk to a large group of people was not an easy thing to do.

B. When I was giving a talk to a large group of people, I felt uneasy.

 

A. Can you help me? I am not sure what to do.

В. Many young teachers feel unsure of themselves.

 

2. A. Look at the list of experiences. Which of these are outside your comfort zone? Draw a "+" if you find it ok, and a "-" if it is outside your comfort zone.

B. Would you like to do any of the activities? How would each of these experiences make you feel? Fill in the table with the adjectives.

3. Discuss the experiences in pairs. Exchange your cards and ask your partner questions about his/her attitude to the activities. Use information from the card and ask him/her to give reasons.

Example:

Why is ... outside your comfort zone? Why would it make you feel ...?

4. Do you and your partner have similar attitudes? Decide on the scariest /                   the most unpleasant experience. Report your findings to the class.

1. Take a card. Think about how to describe the leisure activity on your card. You have 1 minute to get the other students in your group to guess the name of the activity.

          Follow the instructions about which words you can or can’tuse.

  COOKING   Don’t say: cook, meal You can say: ingredients, recipe, cut, chop …     MAKING CLOTHES Don’t say: clothes, sew, knit You can say: material, style …

 

2. Use the Likes and Dislikes card to tell the others in your group how you feel about one of the activities in Exercise 1. Explain why you feel this way (give at least one reason).
