Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince 1. lived in a shining castle. Although he 2. had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. But then, one winter's night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and 3.offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. 4. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince 5. sneered at the gift and 6. turned the old woman away, but she 7. warned him not 8. to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is 9. found _ within. And when he 10. dismissed her again, the old woman's ugliness 11. melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to 12. apologize, but it was too late, for she 13. had seen that there was no love in his heart, and as punishment, she 14. transformed him into a hideous beast, and 15. placed a powerful spell on the castle, and all who lived there. Ashamed of his monstrous form, the beast 16. concealed himself inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she 17. had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which 18. would bloom until his twenty-first year. If he 19. could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal 20. fell then the spell would 21. be broken. If not, he would be 22. doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he 23. fell into despair, and 24. lost all hope, for who 25. could ever 26.learn to love a beast?

4. BELLE: If only I could see my father again, just for a moment. I miss him so much.

8. BEAST: Then...then you must go to him.
