В английском языке время определяется по тому, сколько минут прошло после полного часа или же сколько осталось до полного часа.

Так, например, на часах 7 часов. Англичане говорят: It’s 7 o’clock.

Когда минутная стрелка начинает двигаться по правой части циферблата, т.е. от полного часа, англичане называют количество минут, прошедших после этого целого часа.

Например: 7:05- It’s five past seven.

7:20- It’s twenty past seven.

Когда же минутная стрелка двигается по левой части циферблата, тогда говорят, сколько минут осталось до полного часа.

Например: 7:40- It’s twenty to eight.

7:55- It’s five to eight.

Цифры 3, 6 и 9 на циферблате называются специальными словами. Так, например:

7:15- It’s quarter past seven.

7:30- It’s half past seven.

7:45- It’s quarter to eight.
