An academic dress is formal clothing worn by some university teachers and students at special ceremonies. For example, students being presented to the Chancellor must wear full academic dress. An academic dress consists of a gown, a hood, and a mortarboard. An academic gown is a long loose piece of clothing that is worn over other clothes. A hood is a piece of coloured silk or fur worn over an academic gown to show the kind of degree held by the person wearing it. A mortarboard is a black hat with a stiff square top. At Oxford students sometimes have to wear gowns at dinner or when they go to see the college principal. When they sit examinations or go to a degree ceremony they have to wear academic dress. This consists of a black suit or skirt, black shoes and socks or tights, a white shirt or blouse and a black tie. Women also have to wear a tie or ribbon. On top they wear their gown and a mortarboard and, when they graduate, a hood that shows their status. At Cambridge students only have to wear gowns when they matriculate, that is, when they become members of the university, and at graduation. Graduation is a ceremony in which degree certificates are given to people who have graduated from a university.
