Antarctica is the driest place on Earth. Parts of the continent have seen no rain for two million years. A desert is technically defined as a place that receives less than 10 inches of rain a year. The Sahara gets just 1 inch of rain a year. As well as the driest place on Earth, Antarctica can also claim to be the wettest and the windiest. Seventy percent of the world’s fresh water is found there in the form of ice, and its wind speeds are the fastest ever recorded. The unique conditions in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica are caused by so-called katabatic winds. These occur when cold, dense air is pulled downhill simply by the force of gravity. Though Antarctica is a desert, these completely dry parts of it are called, somewhat ironically, oases. They are so similar to conditions on Mars that NASA used them to test the Viking mission.

Задание 39

Dear Nancy,

Thank you for your last letter and I’m sorry I couldn’t answer you earlier.

I think that theoretically every student or a young person with good characteristics and a will of helping could have been a volunteer in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Actually I know a girl who worked there this winter. It wasn't her first experience in organizing a sport event, because it's her specialization in University. I would like to be on reception, to help visitors and answer their questions. I would choose this kind of volunteer activities because I know foreign languages.

Anyway, you mentioned your mom. How is she doing? Is she feeling better? Is it just a typical spring cold and nothing serious?

I've got to go as my father is asking me to help him with his car.

Write back soon.

Best wishes,

Maria

Пример сочинения:

Different people have different tastes. Some of them prefer eating out, while others enjoy tasty food at home. In the past people went to cafes and restaurants only on special occasions. But they are eating out more frequently now.

Personally, I enjoy eating out. Firstly, the choice of restaurants is great nowadays. You can try different foreign cuisines and you can always find something to your taste. There are Italian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, Turkish and many other restaurants in every city. Besides, you can go to bars, cafes or pubs. Secondly, many people work too much and have no time to cook meals at home. Thirdly, they go to bars, cafes or restaurants to meet with their friends or to celebrate a holiday. Finally, at a restaurant you will be able to relax and enjoy tasty food, good service and the atmosphere of festivity.

However, a lot of people prefer eating at home. Some of them say that it is too expensive to go to a restaurant. Others just enjoy cooking meals. What is more, some people are sure that home meals are tastier and more nutritious than food which is served at a restaurant or a cafe.

To sum up, eating at home is cheaper and more traditional. But if you want to relax and to feel a holiday atmosphere, you will certainly eat out.

I’ve chosen photo number 1. I would like to tell you more about this picture. I took this photo on the sixth day of our expedition. In the foreground of the picture two men are gathering oranges. The weather on that day was fantastic. We came to the local village to see how people live there. They were very friendly. We hit it off immediately. They were kind enough to invite us to their apartment. One of them even told me the history of this place. In the photo they are gathering oranges which they use in different ways. We left the village with bags full of ripe oranges. I keep the photo in my album because it reminds me of those local people who were very kind and friendly. Also the shot is very good. I showed this picture to you because as I know you are interested in cultures of other people. That is why I thought that this photo may be useful to you. I hope that you liked the photo.

In the photo number one we can see a group of people. By the presentence of some special equipment. I can say that they are shooting the interview with some famous people. In the picture number two we see two women. One of them is a makeup artist. She’s doing a make-up for another woman – a model. The model has a strange wig. She looks like she’s an actress who plays in historical movie about the 18th century.

Both of the pictures are related with filming and TV industry. In both of them, some people will appear on the TV screen. Both photos present life of the backstage. The difference is that first scene tells about some interview, which is a realistic scene. The second picture shows the preparation process for a film, which is related with the world of art.

As for me, though I’m afraid of the cameras, I prefer to play in some historical movie. It would be funny to dress in some historical costume and have a special haircut and make-up.
