How would you describe a typical British? Is British politeness a stereotype? Do British people really love tea? What is the British humour like? Are all British people enthusiastic gardeners? Does every talk in Britain really star with the weather? English people are very conservative, aren’t they?

Belarusian dishes are typically based on local vegetables, especially potatoes. Potatoes are called “the second bread” in Belarus. The most popular dish from potatoes is draniki. If you come to Belarus it`s a must to taste them.

By the way, draniki are easy to cook. You`ll need 6 potatoes,1 egg, 2 table spoons flour, 1 onion, salt, pepper and oil. First of all, peel, wash and grate the potatoes, and peel and chop the onion. Mix potatoes and onion. Then add the egg, flour and salt, and stir well until it become combined. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan and add potato mixture with a table spoon in the form of small flat cakes. Fry draniki on one side for about 2–3 minutes until it has a golden brown crust. Then turn the draniki over and fry for a further 1–2 minutes. Serve with main dishes and sour cream.

5. People say: “When in Rome do as Romans do.” What do you think about it?

The phrase ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’ means that ‘when you are living in, or visiting, a community of people, you should follow the laws and customs of that community’.

The proverb also has a more general moral sense. It is polite and respectful to observe local customs and do as locals do. It demonstrates a ‘willingness to learn about others’ way of life and to see things from their point of view, and a respect for that viewpoint too‘.

Thus, in essence, the proverb ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’ is all about:

Respecting other people’s ways of life.
Learning about other cultures.
Not imposing one’s own beliefs and habits on others.
Respecting local laws.
Integrating oneself into another society.
