It is more important to have an enjoyable job than to earn a lot of money.

Vocabulary

  • earning a living
  • job satisfaction
  • work extra hard
  • to fit people’s interests
  • satisfy all the needs
  • A satisfying job fills life with positive emotions giving the energy to accomplish different tasks to manage our daily routine.
  • For individuals, work is an important feature in the realizing their potential and ability to contribute to society. Work provides people with an inner creative joy. It saves them from the dullness and boredom of life. It puts our energies to a proper use.

§ There are people who believe that the material aspect is of primary importance. The more money you have, the better life you can afford. Besides, money means opportunities – opportunities for better housing, education, entertainment and simply higher quality of life.

One of the most frequently discussed topics nowadays is the one about different career choices. Some people state that having a fulfilling job is the key to a happy life, while others argue that earning much money is what is truly important.

On the one hand, some would claim that there is hardly a person in this world who would not want to work in the field they are passionate about. This can be explained by the fact that mostly all people have been encouraged to pursue a career that best suits their interests in life. Moreover, feeling enthusiastic about the work inspires individuals to be more creative and endows them a certain sense of accomplishment. As an example, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, is renowned for his commitment to the business and he certainly achieved great success in it.

On the other hand, others believe that the only way to live a happy life is to have a high-paying job. It is widely known that lucrative occupations usually do not require original approaches. This may be due to the fact that these work options are very accessible to the general public, often involve only technical skills and are not off the beaten track. This means that they allow the people involved to reach their goals early in the work process. Therefore, for instance, even recent graduates from prestigious universities lead wealthy lifestyles and are able to afford anything they desire.

In summary, there are countless advantages to these career choices. While many convincing arguments have been mentioned for both points of view, I believe that in order to be content in life it is better to have a job you are truly interested in, as it is the most logical way to implement one’s dreams into reality.

The most important consideration when choosing any career or job is having a high income.

It is widely accepted that, for most people, their daily working lives will not be spent in their dream jobs. Despite this, I do not feel that people should instead prioritise becoming a high earner above all other concerns.

To begin with, I strongly believe that people need stimulation in their daily working lives in order to feel a sense of reward. Very few of us can go through an entire career staying in a position or an industry that we find boring purely for the financial incentive. Secondly, there are so many people who see their working life as a search for fulfilment and contentment in helping others, rather than a search for wealth. It seems unlikely that the priority for, say, every nurse or teacher in the world is to become well-off, and jobs such as these are rarely extremely well-paid.

Despite this, some would argue that those people who have families to support should always prioritise earning a high income; after all, it means securing their children's future. Others point out that, as the job market becomes increasingly unstable across the globe, it is vital to earn more and therefore save more. However, I do not agree that a good salary should necessarily be the number one concern for everyone. Too many people become preoccupied with the next pay rise or career move, and eventually become unhappy or even depressed, neither of which helps them to save or to provide for their family.

In summary, earning as much money as is humanly possible should not be anyone's main concern. Granted, it arguably brings financial stability, for individuals and for their families, but it is simply not worth tolerating a lifetime of unhappiness at work purely for the money.
