Prefixes!

It's like a remix.

It changes things,

Like what a word means.

You can find 'em

at the front of a word.

Learn 'em, you need 'em,

To figure out words and their meanings.

Allow me to reintroduce this word,

'Cause re- means again, let's be sure you heard.

Even the word prefix has a prefix in it,

Pre- means before, man, I hope y'all remembering.

You may ask where they come from,

Most are Greek or Latin, there's a whole bunch of 'em,

Like macro- is large and micro- is small,

Mono- is one. Are you hearing me, y'all?

I could talk in a monotone on the telephone,

And tele- goes the distance just like a telescope.

If you kinda understand that's semi-,

You'll halfway get it till you commit it to memory.

Keep these in your mind's foreground,

'Cause fore- means front and you'll need 'em around.

This song is over and I don't mean ending,

It's overqualified, too much of a good thing.

Суффиксы(рис. 3) добавляются к концу основного слова, и они могут изменить не только основное значение слова, но и сделать его другой частью речи.

Суффиксы для образования существительных, обозначающих профессии:

-ist, -ian, -man, -er/-or (рис. 4).

Пример:

Piano (пианино) – pianist (пианист)

Politic (политический) – politician (политик)

Build (строить) – builder (строитель)

Police (полиция) – policeman (полицейский)

Суффиксы для образования прилагательных:

-y, -ful, -less, -ic, -able (рис. 5).

Пример:

Dirty – грязный

Wonderful– прекрасный

Priceless – бесценный

Historic – исторический

Eatable– съедобный

Tip: изучая новое слово, попробуйте сразу запоминать его производные.

Например:

Happy – счастливый

Unhappy – несчастный

Happiness – счастье

Exercises

Чтобы лучше понять и усвоить особенности употребления приставок и суффиксов, рассмотренных в данном уроке, необходимо выполнить следующие упражнения.
