 Petrozavodsk State University is aclassical university, located in Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, Russian Federation.

  Brief History :It was founded in 1940 as the Karelian-Finnish University and was renamed in 1956.  Initially, the university consisted of 4 faculties and at that time numbered about 700 students. During the war, the university was evacuated to Syktyvkar. In August 1944, it returned back to Petrozavodsk.

After the occupation, the university building was in ruins. The library and almost all the equipment was destroyed. The government helped the university greatly. The laboratories and teaching rooms were newly equipped a11nd prepared for classes. The university started operating having only 4 faculties at the beginning1. Over time, new faculties were opened.

 Present time: Now Petrozavodsk Stat1e University is the largest educational institution in northwestern Russia. It trains highly qualified pr1ofessionals who are working in different regions of Russia and abroad. PetrSU is included in the top 100 best universities in Russia. It won the leading places by the “internationalization» criterion and the third place among the universities that promote employment of students and graduates. It has 87 international agreements with foreign universities, research organizations and scientific-and-production companies of Finland, Canada, the USA, the Great Britain and Italy.

 Structure of the university: The rector is the head of university. The Rectorate also includes the president, who represents the university externally, and several vice-rectors, e.g. for administration, teaching, research, household and others. The most important decision-making body is the senate, where professors, directors of the institutes, scientific staff and, in some cases, students are based. 

The university is divided into individual institutes and faculties headed by deans. Each faculty has several departments. The university includes 10 faculties, 6 educational institutes, 79 departments, 84 laboratories, a number of development and proj1ect departments, 27 innovative departments, 28 small enterprises, 2 techno parks, a publishing house, a scientific library (one of the largest in northern European Russia, with more than 1,179,042 books), a botanical garden, and the "Onego" swimming pool.

The faculties of Petrozavodsk State University are located in 13 separate buildings scattered throughout the city. Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. The number of students is more than 14,500 in direct and distance learning. The teaching staff includes more than 1000 professors and lecturers.
