The Pillars of IslamThe Pillars of Islam This is another lesson that Muslims registered on our site will also learn. They are based on the core practices of Islam and include · The Shahadah as mentioned above · Salat – the five daily prayers – these are done with a full ablution and facing towards the Qiblah at designated times five times a day. The prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and after dark. They can be performed at a mosque with iman or at home. · Ramadan or fasting – this is a 29 or 30 days not eating from dawn to dusk that occurs in the ninth months of the Islamic calendar. During this period, Muslims who have come of age will abstain from food and water until the sunsets. They are also encouraged to recite the 60 izul of the Quran throughout the period and perform good deeds, including feeding and helping those less fortunate in the environment. · Zakat or almsgiving – according to Islamic law, every Muslim is to give one-tenth of their total income to the community in need. They can use the alms for different things, including alleviating the poverty situation of the poor, providing clean water; build a hospital, masjid, or others to help people. · Pilgrimage – this is for those that can afford it, and it is performed once in a lifetime. If you can afford to go every year, good for you but it is advisable to help another make the trip after you have done yours.
