The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelands is situated on the British Isles.

The British Isles consists of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about five thousand small islands.

Their total area is over 244,000 square kilometers.

The UK is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales and doesn't include Northern Ireland.

About 4,600 years ago – or maybe more – the Stone Age inhabitants of Britain started building an enormous stone structure. This structure is now called Stonehenge, and it is near Salisbury, in the South of England. The largest of the Stonehenge stones weigh 50 tons, and the smallest weight 5 tons. The people who started Stonehenge were primitive. They used no metal and their tools were made only of stone, bone and wood. Those primitive people usually spent all day, from sunrise to sunset, hunting, fishing and growing crops. They started to build Stonehenge in about 1,000 B. C. and finished it 600 years later.

London is one the greatest cities in the world and is an important centre of art, entertainment and high finance. Its attractions include royal pageantry, architectural masterpieces, fist-class museums and art galleries. Well, let’s start our traveling.

We will start in Trafalgar Square (слайд 8). In the centre of square there is a big column. At the top of the column there is a statue of Admiral Nelson who had to fight the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

From Trafalgar Square we will go down and visit the Houses of Parliament. The British government is here. We know about the history of the Parliament and Gunpowder Plot.

The Houses of Parliament are near Buckingham Palace (слайд 10), so we will go there next. It’s the London home of the Queen. Now there is a museum on the ground floor.

After Buckingham Palace we go will to Madame Tussaud`s (слайд 11). It is a famous museum of wax figures. They have hundreds of wax figures of all the famous people in the world. The collection was started by Madam Tussaud, a French modeler in wax, in the 18 century. Here you can meet the Royal Family, Marilyn Monroe, Enshtein, Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, Adolf Gitler, the Beatles, Picasso and many other: writers, singers, sportsmen, politicians, movie stars.

The Tower of London is the oldest museum now. It was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. It was a fortress, a castle, a prison and a zoo. There are always black ravens in the Tower. People look after them very well, as they believe that London will be rich as long as ravens live there. The Tower is guarded by Beefeaters.

Westminster Abby is a large Gothic church. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial place of most British Monarchs.

The Natural History museum is one of three largest museums in London. There are five main collections here: Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy, Paleontology and Zoology. The museum is famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons.
