Leisure time and hobbies

Leisure time and hobbies

Schoolchildren usually don’t have much free time, because they have to go to school and do their homework. But when school is over, homework is done and you’ve finished any household chores you have to do, how do you fill your free time? It seems that teenagers have a thousand and one things that they like to do, from hobbies to sports, from reading to playing music.

A hobby is a favourite pastime of a person. Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby to your liking, lucky you are: you have made your life more interesting.

Numerous hobbies can be divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things.

The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to travelling and from chess to football. A relatively new hobby which has become very popular recently is computer games.

Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes and handicrafts . Some hobbyists are keen on writing music.

Almost everyone collects something at some period of their life: coins, books, CDs, posters, toys, watches, model cars. Some collections have no real value. Others may become so large and valuable that they can be housed in museums and galleries.

No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. Learning thins can be the most exciting aspect of a hobby.

Most teenagers generally spend their leisure time doing sports, shopping or going out with friends, sightseeing and travelling; watching TV or listening to the music of their favourite radio station. Teenagers from informal groups spend their free time according to their values and beliefs. They may team with those who share their interests and listen to the music that deviates from the mainstream. They may have rave parties or bike shows, navigate the internet, or organise fan clubs.
Some other teens prefer to spend a lot of time indoors because they are TV addicts or they are fond of computer or video games. Some like to be alone because they are keen on reading or watching videos.

I know some teens who are fans of a music group or a singer. They collect posters and records, visit concerts regularly, and exchange pictures and news. They like to sing songs of their pop or rock idols and find information about them on the internet. On different websites, admirers can find pictures and lyrics or download the music.

As for me, my favourite pastime is travelling because, in my opinion, it is the most pleasant way of learning about the world.
