WORK: Your main task will be the preparation of the nature kindergarten: You are going to transform a former bee house into a place for the children to spend time at during bad weather. This includes painting the walls and decorating the room with wooden elements and decorations. Feel free to get creative! You are also going to make seats, benches and tables out of tree trunks for the children.

Another task will be the creation of raised garden beds, which you will set up, fill with soil and prepare everything so that the children can then afterwards grow their own vegetables and fruit! There might be some other manual tasks awaiting you, such as putting together a sandbox for the children to play in.

The second part of the project is to make the town’s swimming area more attractive: You will build a wooden foot bridge into the lake, hang up a “tarzan” rope to swing into the lake and set up a barbecue place on meadow next to the lake.

Lots of outside manual and construction work is awaiting you, so please bring sturdy shoes, working gloves, sun protection and raingear!

ACCOMMODATION: You will stay at the town’s youth house which is situated at the outskirts of the town, but easily reachable by foot. Inside the building, there will be two rooms for sleeping (please bring your own sleeping bag!), sanitary facilities and a kitchen. Outside, there is also plenty of space which you can use during your stay, such as a big garden and an “outside living room” under a roof. On Monday and Friday afternoon, some part of the youth centre will be open to youngsters (you can lock your rooms), the rest of the time the building is all yours. Supermarkets are nearby and can easily be reached by foot or bike. The worksite will also be reached by bike or foot.

LOCATION: Höchstädt is situated on the river Danube and has a nice historical centre with museums and cafés and its own castle! Since it’s well connected by train, it is also possible to visit nearby towns such as Ulm and Augsburg or even Munich. The area is also great for nature lovers, there are plenty of well-developed bike-roads and many lakes that you can swim in. You will be able to meet local youngsters at the youth centre or through sports clubs.

PROJECT: The municipality of Hoechstaedt is looking forward to opening their first “nature kindergarten” at the start of September 2020. The kindergarten will have capacities for 20 children. In order to finish everything before the opening of the kindergarten, they need your help! The second project of the workcamp is the embellishment of the nearby quarry lake, so that it can be enjoyed by the general population of the town. It is important to the municipality to have a sustainable project that will enrich the community for many years (SDG 11 sustainable communities).

REMARKS: Volunteers will need to be able to swim in order to work next to the lake. It is also recommended that volunteers know how to ride a bike.
