Nouns

Age – range - a range indicating the upper and lower ages considered suitable for a specified thing children in the age range 12-14

A level Exam-a public examination in a subject taken for the General Certificate of Education (GCE), usually at the age of 17–18

Applicant-a person who applies, as for a job, grant, support.

Assistant - someone's assistant is a person who helps them in their work.

Dean-the chief administrative official of a college or university faculty

Compulsory education - a period of educational attendance required of all students.

County school - a school that is established and funded by the local education authority.

Comprehensive school-a school for secondary aged children that does not select its intake on the basis of academic achievement or aptitude.

College- a school for advanced education, especially in a particular profession or skill.

Compulsory objects - are specific subject combinations which are required in order for an applicant to be admitted to a specific course.

Catchment area - the area from which people are allocated to a particular school

Course - a period of study in a particular subject, especially at university.

Curriculum - a list of all the courses of study offered by a school or college.

Degree- an academic award conferred by a university or college on successful completion of a course or as an honorary distinction.

Doctoral degree is the highest level of academic degree in most fields.

Degree of Bachelor is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to seven years.

Examination - a set of questions asked in testing or interrogating.

Exam  is a formal test that you take to show your knowledge or ability in a particular subject, or to obtain a qualification.

Further education is the education of people who have left school but who are not at a university or a college of education.

Full time student is a person enrolled in a post-secondary institution of learning who is taking at least the minimum number of course credit hours according to the institution's requirements.

Finals - the last examination series in an academic or professional course.

Foundation subjects - the subjects studied as part of the National Curriculum, including the compulsory core subjects.

General certificate of education - a public examination in specified subjects taken in English and Welsh schools at the ages of 17 and 18.

GCSEs - are British educational qualifications which schoolchildren take when they are fifteen or sixteen years old.

Gymnasium- a secondary school that prepares pupils for university.  

Grade - a mark that a student is given for their work or for an examination.

Higher education - college or university education as opposed to school or high school.

Hall of residence - a college or university building where students live.

Head teacher - the teacher in charge of a school.

Infants - are children between the ages of five and seven, who go to an infant school.

Independent school - a school that is neither financed nor controlled by the government or local authorities.

Junior  student- a student in the third year of a high school or university course.

Lecture - a talk someone gives in order to teach people about a particular subject, usually at a university or college.

Lecturer is a teacher at a university or college.

Lesson- is a fixed period of time when people are taught about a particular subject or taught how to do something.

Library- a building where things such as books, newspapers, videos, and music are kept for people to read, use, or borrow.

Primary school- is a school for children between the ages of 5 and 11.

Private school - is a school which is not supported financially by the government and which parents have to pay for their children to go to.

Public school - is a private school that provides secondary education which parents have to pay for.

Post graduate studentis a student with a first degree from a university who is studying or doing research at a more advanced level.

Professor- in an American or Canadian university or college is a teacher of the highest rank.

Part time student - is a non-traditional student who pursues higher education, typically after reaching physical maturity, while living off-campus, and possessing responsibilities related to family and/or employment.

Physical education - is the school subject in which children do physical exercises or take part in physical games and sports.

Primary education - education for children below the age of 11.

Principal- the head of a school or other educational institution.

Profession - is a type of job that requires advanced education or training.

Secondary school - is a school for pupils between the ages of 11 or 12 and 17 or 18.

Study- a subject that people study at a college or university.

Senior student - is a student in the fourth year of study.

Secondary education- education for pupils between the ages of 11 and 18.

Teaching - the work or profession of a teacher.

Teacher is a person who teaches, usually as a job at a school or similar institution.

Tutorial - is a regular meeting between a tutor and one or several students, for discussion of a subject that is being studied.

Tutor - someone who gives private lessons to one student or a small group, and is paid directly by them.

University- is an institution where students study for degrees and where academic research is done.

Undergraduate - is a student at a university or college who is studying for his or her first degree.
