Билет №22. National character and stereotypes

1. How will you describe a typical Englishman? The fire is the focus of the English home. They like sitting around open fire and enjoy the ceremony of English tea.
2. Is it true that Belarusians eat potatoes at all meals? Of course, not. But people joke about the love of Belarusians for potatoes not without reason. Indeed, potatoes play a very important role in Belarusians’ daily nutrition, so you will see this heroic vegetable in different variations on the dining table of a typical Belarusian almost every day. On average, one Belarusian eats more than 170 kilograms of potatoes per year. Such statistics make Belarus first in the world. Potatoes in Belarusian cuisine are prepared in dozens of ways and styles: they are boiled, baked, roasted, fried, grated and then cooked, stuffed with other goodies, used in soups and salads.
3. What questions will you ask your British friend to find out his / her opinion about our country? What can you say about our people? What impressed you most while visiting Belarus? Do you agree that Belarus is an interesting country to visit?
4. Your British friend wants to discover Belarusian cuisine. What advice will you give him / her? There are a lot of traditional Belarusian dishes which are cooked in almost every family. First of all you should try dishes from potato, which is called “the second bread” in Belarus. The most popular dish from potato is draniki. They are potato pancakes. They are usually served with sour cream. The second place in Belarusian national cuisine belongs to meat and meat products, especially to pork and salted pork fat. Machanka is an authentic Belarusian dish cooked from fried meat cuts with butter and flour gravy. It is used as a Belarusian sauce for draniki or bliny. You should definitely try khaladnik soup. This is a cold soup made from sour milk, marinated beetroot and fresh vegetables. Khaladnik actually comes from the word “cold”, which makes it the most refreshing thing you can eat on a hot day. Belarusian national cuisine also offers fresh, dried, salted and pickled mushrooms and various berries.
5. What do you think is the best symbol of Belarus? The national symbols of Belarus are the national flag, the national emblem and the national anthem. The most widely known symbols of our country are a bison, a stork and a cornflower. But in my opinion the main treasure and the best symbol of Belarus is its people. Belarusians are known as tolerant, kind-hearted, patient and peaceful. They respect people of other nationalities, cultures and religions. We are hard-working and hospitable. People turn to Belarusians for help and support because they know that a Belarusian will always be responsive and helpful.
