A ScientistAnalyzesMr. Wyatt'sChromosomeTheory

Dr. EugeneDunkley, Geneticist

InregardstothestatementsmadebyRonWyattandhischromosomalanalysis: I donotbelievethatanyofRon'sfindingsorconclusionswilleffecttheSeventhDayAdventistsortheirfaith. I don'tbelievethathehad a crusadeagainstthedenominationoranydenominationforthatmatter.

Rehisfindings-youmustrememberthatRonwas NOT a scientist, hewasananesthetist. Thisisnottoexcusemistakesinhisdetails, buttounderstandmoreaccuratelywherehewascomingfrom. I satwithRonandDerekatD'shouseinOxfordandRonexplainedtomewhatwasdone. I filledinthedetailsinmyownmind, knowingthattherewereholesinwhathesaid, butnotdonetodeceive, just a lackofknowledge.

Karyotypesareperformedallthetime. Itis a techniqueinwhichthechromosomesarearrestedinmetaphaseby a drugandthenstainedwitheitherGiemsaor a reversestain, andtheninthisstageareseparatedandcountedandcharacterized. Thereisalso a bandingpatternassociatedwitheachchromosomepairsothatidentificationofthechromosomeisunmistakable. Whitebloodcellsaretheonlybloodcellsthatcanbeusedforsuchan " experiment". Russell'scriticismisinaccuratebecauseheomittedwhatwouldhavehadtohappenfortheexperimenttotakeplace. First, thebloodsamplewasscrapedfromthealtar. Thecellswereresuspendedin PBS (a buffer), whichallowedthecellstore-hydrate. Then, thecellswerecultured. Onlycellswith DNA wouldbeabletogrowinculture, sothereisnoneedto " separate" redbloodcells, platelets, etc., becausetheysimplywouldn'tbepresentin a freshlygrowingculture. Thesecellsweresimplywhitebloodcellsinculture (a routineprocedure). Next, thecells (orsomeofthem) wouldbetaken, arrestedwhenthecellswereinmetaphase (whenthechromosomecondenseandarevisiblebymicroscopy) andstained. Someofthestainsallowlightmicroscopy, butothersallowfluorescentmicroscopy. I imaginethatRondidn'tknowonetypeofmicrocopefromanother; hecoulduseanelectronmicroscopetoseethechromosomes, butcertainlynottocountthemorcharacterizethem. However, thatwouldnotdetractfromthefinding. Thekaryotypewouldhavebeenmade, andthechromosomesplacedintheirproperpairs.

RonwasconvincedthatthebloodofthealtarwasinfactthedivinebloodofJesusbecausethechromosomecountwas 24. IfJesuswas ONLY humanwewouldexpect 46. Infact, ifhefound 46 chromosomesI wouldhavemydoubtsbecausetheargumentwouldbethatitwassimplythebloodof a humanbeing (exceptofcoursethatthewhitebloodcellswerere-vitalizedafteralmost 2000 years.... ). Russelliswrongaboutthefrequencyofchromosomaldiseasesinhumans: a numberofconditionsinvolvingeither 47 or 45 chromosomeshavebeenwellcharacterized, besidesTurner's, suchasKlinefelters, Down'ssyndrome, Pateau'ssyndrome, Cri-de-Chatsyndrome, XYY, XXY, etc. andinfacttherewas a caseinwhich a youngmanwasfoundalivewithonly 24chromosomes.

YoumustrememberthatRon'sinaccuraciesindescribingthisfindingareduetothefactthathedidnotpersonallydotheexperimentsorpreparethecells, becauseitisnothisfieldofexpertise. Hesimplygotthedataandpresenteditwiththeunderstandingthathehad. Russellmaybecorrectaboutotheraspectsoftheresearch (I amnotanarchaeologist), buthehimselfisnotaccurateaboutthecellsandthechromosomes, andhiscritiquesuggeststhatheisbeingsubjective.

Ofcourse, I onlyhavethedescriptionofwhatRonsaidtome, so I toohavenoharddata. However, ifthereis a needtoexplainthisdata I wouldbehappytodosoindefenseofthefindings. Infact, thereareseveralmoreexperimentsthatcouldbedonetofurtherprovewhatRonstated. However, I donotbelievethattheywouldbenecessary, andinfactwouldcause a fewproblems (especiallyinthisageofcloning, onewouldconceivablywanttoclonethedivinechromosomeandmodifythemselves). I dorememberthatRonwasreluctanttosayanythingaboutthefinding, buthefeltmovedduringhistalkatourchurch, havingmetwithmeearlier, tosaywhathehadfound. Heknewthat I wouldhavesomeknowledgeofthefield, andifinfacthethoughtitwasdodgyhewould NOT havesaidanythingbecauseheknewthat I wouldbeoneofthefewpeopleabletopickitapart. Hesaiditinhissermonknowingthat I wouldunderstandit, and I feeltothisdaythatGodmovedonhimtodosothatthefindingwouldbespokenofandwouldstandthetest. ThisconvincesmethatRonisright...
