Past Tense TO BE: Use it to talk about things that happened in the past

 

ACTIVITIES:

  1. Underline the two sentences in present tense and translate them.
  2. Find the following words in the dictionary: smile/ skate/ like/ alive/ die /proud/miss
  3. Past tense of TO BE = WAS/WERE. 0bserve the following sentences and explain the use of WAS and WERE.
  4. Translate each sentence.

 

 

1. She was my grandma.

2. Those were her favorite skates.

3. Hepsibahwas her name.

4. She was from England.

5. She is not alive.

6. She died when I was 14 years old.

7. My parents were very proud of her.

8. She skated every day.

9. She liked to do exercise.

10. My brothers were very happy to skate with her.

11. She always smiled when she was with us.

12. We miss her very much

The past tense of the verb to be has two forms:

 

WAS for singulars  

Were for plurals.

 

 

Example:

Affirmative =I was a very little baby.       

Negative    = I wasn´ t (was not) a very little baby

Interrogative = Was I a very little baby?

 

The girls (plural)

Affirmative = The girls were at the pajamas party.

Negative  =The girlsweren´ tat the pajamas party. (Were not)

Interrogative =were the girls at the pajamas party?

You singular or plural always useswere Example:
