Reading Comprehension: Attending ESOL Classes

Read the passage below and then complete the tasks:

Marta and Gita are best friends from Romania. They came to live in England, hoping to give their family a better life. The Job Centre gave Marta the opportunity to attend free ESOL classes and has become more confident in communicating in English with other people. One day while they we out shopping, Gita asked Marta why she always listens to the radio in English while she is driving because she never understands a word they are saying. Marta explained to Gita that listening to the radio helps her improve her English skills and that she learns new words and expressions all the time. Marta told Gita that her ESOL teacher always tells her to listen to native speakers and repeat what they say. Gita strongly disagreed and said that if she doesn’t understand what they are saying, how is her English going to improve? Marta asked Gita to think about attending English classes as she might learn new things. Gita didn’t think she was that bad and that she has coped since she arrived in England with basic English, so she didn’t feel she needed to attend ESOL classes. Marta then said if she feels that way, why couldn’t she understand the British people? Gita said because the British speak too fast. Marta still felt it would be better if she took ESOL classes to improve her listening skills. Marta then told Gita that the centre she goes to has helped hundreds of people like them and most of them have found jobs earning good money.
